Animal of the week #2: Koalas

Koalas are soft and cuddly. I know because I held a koala yesterday.
Koalas are not bears, they are marsupials. Their babies develop in a pouch. The koala babies go in from the bottom of the pouch. Koalas have two thumbs on their hands so they can clamp onto me, and they eat eucalyptus leaves. Koalas sleep 18 hours a day because the leave only have 5% sugar. There are 125 koalas in the Lone Pine Sanctuary. When I was holding the koala, the koala made a mark on my t-shirt from his scent gland. I smelled like eucalyptus all day! Emil did too.

  1. A koala seems like a good animal of the week when your in Austrailia!
Do they let everyone get that close to the animals or just people that travel in large groups?

  2. I am still wondering what kinds of noises koalas make... do you know? They sure look cuddly and I am so glad you are having a great adventure! Love, Theia Noël

  3. Where are the two thumbs located? Are they next to each other or at both ends of a hand? How many fingers do koalas have on each hand?
Also interested in the eucalyptus smell. Does it concentrate in the scent gland and what are they using the scent gland for?
Clio! The brain of all animals needs more sugars than any other organ and this is probably why they sleep so much! Not enough sugar in their diets.
Very pretty pictures. Were you afraid of the koala?

  4. Forgot to ask: do you think they communicate through the grunts and whines?

  5. Clio we loved seeing these pictures! I wondered how big the baby koalas are when they are born? Did you hear them make any noises? We can't wait to hear more about your adventures!
